Governor Cuomo has made mandate relief a central part of his campaign and tenure so far as governor. The results so far have not been overwhelming, but there have been some good first steps taken. The 2% tax cap legislation that was passed in 2011 will put pressure on the State government to enact mandate relief, because the annual rise in the cost of unfunded mandates is much greater than 2%. However, there is a great deal of pushback against mandate relief by those who are currently benefiting from the status quo. We need to stand up and support those who support mandate relief.
The Governor recently launched a new website called Building a New NY which outlines his agenda for 2012. Several items deal with mandate relief, including a reformed teacher evaluation system, state takeover of the growth of Medicaid costs over the next three years, and pension reform. Contact Governor Cuomo’s office and let him know that you support his efforts and look forward to significant progress on mandate relief in 2012.
